As part of efforts to ensure reduction in the prevailing security and safety challenges in the Ogun state transport sector, security operatives have urged all commercial motorcycle (okada) operators to key into the ongoing registration exercise of motorcycle operators, adding that anyone found not complying would be apprehended.
The Ogun State Public relation officers Abimbola Oyeyemi made this known during a press conference held at the police officer’s mess Ibara Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Oyeyemi emphasized that the registration of the motorcycle riders is sacrosanct and enjoins the support of all security operatives, as it would assist in quick identification of real riders, genuine number plates, aid crime prevention and detection in the State.
He said “Proper documentation of the okada riders will form the database for us to operate in other not to create unnecessary security treat in the State.
“By doing so, this will give us accurate numbers of okada riders we have in the State, their name, area of residence, and their registration number after this registration, they’re going to be given a reflective jacket which will have their number inscribed on it,” he said.
He explained further that the registration will help Security Operatives to identify anyone that commits a crime using okada, saying that it would enable them to know those who are not riders but they are using motorcycle for another purpose.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) maintained that the registration is in collaboration with the State Government as well as the leadership of all the okada associations.
“We have agreed together that this registration is compulsory. We have given a time limit for registration and the enforcement will be effective from first October 2021.
“Any Okada rider who fails to properly document his presence here in Ogun State would probably have his motorcycle apprehended until the necessary registration is done” he submitted.
The Chairman of the Commercial Motorcycles Riders Identification Scheme Juwon Adebanjo said that the compliance drive would commence on October 1st and urged all riders to register before the due date.
Adebanjo announced that the amount of the registration is two N2000 only.
